The babaylan, who held the multi-faceted role of healer/warrior/keeper of cultural knowledge, were legendary for their resistance against Spanish colonization. The colonizers so feared their powers that they fed the dismembered bodies of babaylan to the buwaya (Tagalog for crocodile). The colonizers did not understand the sacred relationship the babaylan had with the buwaya, the revered guardians of the underworld. This piece reminds me that, even when I feel disconnected from my ancestors and culture, I am part of their resurrection. --Lakan Ubaya Nagsalad
